So here I was, back home, I mean Gururam, armed with this pool of knowledge about growing mushrooms, all eager and enthusiastic to implement everything I learnt. But alas! these restricted spaces of condos is my first roadblock. But who stopped me ever? I step out to nearest village (In Gurugram, the millennium city of India, every urban sector is adjacent to a village)…Badshahpur. Hunting or 5 days and chatting with enough & more house occupants as well as so called dealers, I come across Rameshawar Uncle. He is a retired officer from Haryana Police, lives with one cow, one buffalo and a calf, and most important, has a spare room to rent out, which is exactly what I needed. So, I find my perfect place to grow mushrooms! Of course to find out later, that it’s not so perfect.
So I start, by cleaning the place, all nice and hygienic, as instructed in class room. Arrange my stuff…drum, plastic bags, spawn, fumigation stuff, etc etc.
And the bags show up!
To begin as a trial, I prepared 10 bags of pleurotus florida (white osyer), all by the book. Every step of the way, everything as taught in the class. And finally, my bags show up.
But the mushrooms didn’t!
So I did some mistakes:
-
Didn’t let the spawn dry properly
-
Didn’t make any holes in the bags after filling them
-
Exposed the bags to lots of light during spawn run
And of course the mushrooms didn’t see the light of the day.
I am a big failure
That’s exactly what went through my mind for almost a week after that 10-bag debacle. That…I am a big failure 🙁
But was that supposed to stop me from trying again? Hell no. I pulled myself up, gathered all my learning from first trial and started off to my next trial.
